The former Central Research Organization (CRO) was reformed into the Department of Research and Innovation (DRI) according to the Science and Technology Development Law in 1994. Under the law, the functions and duties of DRI include “conducting standardizations and specifications of weights and measures, equipment and machinery, raw materials and finished goods”. Within Ministry of Education, DRI has lead responsibility for Standards, Conformity Assessment and Metrology infrastructure and is the focal point for the National Quality Infrastructure of Myanmar.

Under the Science and Technology Development Law (1994); one of the functions and duties of DRI is “conducting standardizations and specifications of weights and measures, equipment and machinery, raw materials and finished goods”, the responsibility for Standards, Conformity Assessment and Metrology infrastructure was with the Myanmar Scientific and Technological Research Department (MSTRD) under the Ministry of Science and Technology. In 2015, the Cabinet approved the reorganization of MSTRD and it is now the Department of Research and Innovation. (DRI)

DRI is a multi-disciplinary research department which not only conducts scientific and technological research and development activities, but is also responsible for the coordination of the Myanmar National Quality Infrastructure (NQI) for the industrial, economic and social development of the nation in order to improve the standard of living of the people of Myanmar. DRI is composed of seven departments namely National Standards and Quality Department (NSQD), National Analytical Department (NAL), Renewable Energy and Electronic Technology Research Center, Chemical Technology Research Center, Research Administration Center, Myanmar Department Institute. DRI’s main facility is located in the Yangon Capital and employees about 300 scientists and staff members.
